Golden Weekは英語で何と言う？

ところでゴールデンウィークは英語で通じるのでしょうか？
元々、ゴールデンウィークは「黄金週間」と呼ばれていたようですが、インパクトに欠けるという理由から、「ゴールデンウィーク」と呼ばれるようになりました。

このように「黄金週間」から呼び方が替わっている「ゴールデンウィーク」ですが、和製英語のため日本の暦を知らない、海外の方には通じません。
ゴールデンウィークを英語で伝えたいときは、「大型休暇」という意味の”long holiday”で表現する方が伝わりやすいと言えるでしょう。

そこで、今回は通じない和製英語を紹介します。

・シュークリーム→Cream puff
・シーチキン→Canned tuna
・モーニングコール→Wake up call
・セロテープ→Scotch tape

その他にもたくさん存在する和製英語、皆様も惑わされない様ご注意ください！！

世界のこどもの日

5月5日はこどもの日ですね。
「こどもの日」は男の子の健やかな成長を祈る「端午の節句」と同日という事もあり、男の子の日というイメージもありますが、「こどもの日」は「こどもの人格を重んじ、こどもの幸福をはかるとともに、母に感謝する」日として制定されたそうです。

鯉のぼりを飾り、柏餅やちまき・ちらし寿司などを食べてお祝いするのが一般的ですね！
日本独自の文化のようですが、海外にも「こどもの日」があります。

・韓国　5月5日
お隣の国、韓国では日本と同じ日付でこどもの日が制定されています。
韓国では子供料金の入園料が無料になったりするそうですよ。

・インド　11月14日
子供好きだったインドの初代首相の誕生日にちなんで、こどもの日が制定されました。
多くの学校で盛大にお祝いされ、スピーチをしたり初代首相や教育の大切さなどを学ぶそう！

子どもの福祉世界会議で6月1日に「国際こどもの日（International Children’s Day）」、そして国連により11月20日に「国際こどもの日(Universal Children’s day)」と制定されており、多くの国ではこれらの日にお祝いされます。
国によっては昔からの文化に習って独自でこどもの日を制定しているようですね！

共通しているのはどの国も子供の成長に願いを込めてお祝いすることですね！

今月のReading Challenge “Questions without answers”

Your Applek teachers are surely asking you numerous questions.
The target is very straightforward, they want you to improve your speaking skills, if possible speak even more than them.
Questions are usually simple and open-ended questions to encourage you to develop your replies, and ask similar questions back.
On the other hand, there are still mysteries without clear answers; only theories or approximated answers.
Below we have selected a few examples for you.

How did the Egyptians build the pyramids?

Most stones were quarried (past participle of the verb to quarry, which means to extract stones or sand from a quarry) nearby, however some of the granite ones were transported on the Nile river more than 900 km.
So how did such a unique monument get built in such a short time, without cranes or any other modern techniques?
They didn’t even have iron (at that time only copper, which is less hard than iron, had been discovered).

Many Egyptologists (people studying the history of Egypt) believe that workers used ramps to lift the blocks; levering methods may have also helped and a now disappeared branch of the Nile could have facilitated the construction.
The truth is that even though hundreds of scientists have tried to solve this mystery for centuries, even with the most advanced technologies we still don’t know how the pyramids were built. Maybe aliens built it?

How large is the universe?

So, basically, scientists are telling us that we will never find the end of the universe.
Just look at the stars and realize that we are as small as a drop of water in an ocean.

Which came first, the egg or the chicken?

We will let you meditate on that one.

The largest concerts ever held

Just for your information, Indio Solari is an Argentine musician and singer.
How about Jean-Michel Jarre (a French artist)? Again, no clue? Well, Jean-Michel Jarre has gathered crowds of more than a million spectators on five occasions.
He is the only artist ever to have done so.
Three times in Paris: 1979, 1990 and 1995.
Houston (Texas) in 1986.
Moscow in 1997.

To get an idea of the music performed by Jean-Michel Jarre:

In 1991, Metallica and a few other hard rock or heavy metal bands gathered in Moscow for the joy of over 1.6 million people!

Do you know who sings “Have you ever seen the rain”?
The song is very popular:

But honestly, I didn’t know Rod Stewart was the artist behind it.
Surprisingly his concert in Copacabana (Brazil) 1994 has been reported to have attracted more than 3.5 million people.

Don’t worry, Japanese artists gather large crowds as well!
The Japanese rock band Glay (from Hakodate) held a concert with an audience of 200,000 people on July 31, 1999, in Chiba.

With such large crowds and so much pressure, it is believed that artists can’t perform at their best level and of course spectators can’t see much, but being part of such a concert is being part of music history.
