About Japanese Food Bento

I have been living in Osaka, Japan for almost 10 years. I have been impressed by various aspects of Japanese culture, including Japanese food – bento. Bento is also called “lunch box” in English.

It is usually packed in a special plastic box-shaped container. The contents often are rice, meat or fish as well as Japanese pickles or vegetables.

Bento is not only tasty, but also looks very pretty and colorful. Those carefully chosen colored pickles and vegetables in bento, together with meat or fish, make it look like a piece of art, which pleases both our eyes and stomach.

You can easily find Japanese Bento shops. Some restaurants provide the “take-out” Bento services, too. Among those Bento shops and restaurants, sometimes you can also find a Bento menu in English, Chinese and some other languages.

So, if you have a chance to visit Japan, don’t miss the chance of trying Japanese bento. You’ll surely be satisfied with the taste and appearance!

Traveling in Japan: Osaka city

The city of Osaka was founded in the 7th century, although there are indications of settlements from much earlier periods, with recent discoveries dating as far back as the Stone Age. Osaka served as Japan’s first ward after the unification of Japan by Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
The city was originally called Naniwa (浪速).
The current name was adopted at a later date, with the earliest mention of the name Osaka recorded in 1496.

It is worth mentioning that the original spelling for the name was 大坂(Osaka), which was later changed to 大阪(Osaka) due to the meaning of the second Chinese character, 坂(saka), it has a negative meaning when separated from its original meaning, it could be read as 士反(shitan) (meaning “samurai rebellion”).

To avoid the confusion and appease political tides of the time, the name was changed to its current form in 1870.
Modern day Osaka was established in 1889.

It is currently the third largest city in Japan and, by GDP, the seventh largest in the world. Despite it size, Osaka manages to keep a “small town charm” in many areas where it combines traditional Japanese styles with modern, cutting-edge technology.

Some of the most popular tourist spots in Osaka can be found in Namba (難波), which is the center of the Southern area of Osaka (also known as its entertainment district), featuring many of the city’s most popular bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
The area is also known for shopping, with the Takashimaya department store and the sprawling underground shopping mall.
Umeda (梅田), the Northern center, is Osaka’s main commercial and business district and is one of the busiest places in all of Japan, rivaled only by Tokyo.

When visiting Osaka, do not hesitate to stop at any of the numerous bars, restaurants or food stalls to try takoyaki, a local specialty famous throughout Japan. Osaka is often considered to be “the kitchen of Japan”, offering a true taste of traditional and modern Japan.

Navigation in the city is fairly easy due to excellent public transport, which consists of numerous subway, train and bus lines with trains leaving every five minutes.
It is, however, recommended to have an English map of the city.
Not all areas of the city offer foreign language signs, although the main train and subway stations have multilingual tourist information centers nowadays.

Japanese playing cards

Japanese “flower cards” are called ‘Hanafuda’ or ‘Hanagaruta’ in Japanese. A set of them consists of 48 cards.

There are 12 kinds of suits and each suit has 4 different cards. The 12 suits have seasonal floral designs (pine, plum, cherry, wisteria, iris, peony, bush clover, Japanese pampas grass, chrysanthemum, maple, willow and paulownia) and stand for the 12 lunar calendar months.
Each card has a point value, depending on the suit or pattern.

These playing cards used to be one of the main products of Nintendo.

Calligraphy

Calligraphy is a creative art form which attempts to express spiritual depth and beauty by means of kanji and kana characters written with a brush and “sumi”, or ink.

The art of beautiful handwriting is practiced in the West, too, but because of the complexity of kanji characters, each of which has a certain meaning and the use of a brush which allows the strokes to be made softly or firmly, thick or fine, calligraphy as an art is more highly developed in China, Korea and Japan.

Although appreciation of a work of calligraphy depends on its beauty (brush strokes, structure, color of sumi, arrangement etc.) and content (style, meaning), as the writing expresses the personality of the writer, a good work is considered to be one that moves the observer.
