ビール祭り！オクトーバーフェスト

オクトーバーフェスト(Oktoberfest)は日本語で10月の祭りという意味。
その名前から10月に開催されるものと思っていましたが、実は9月中旬〜10月の第1日曜日か3日までの約2週間で開催されているそうです！

来場者数は600万人以上、会場の大きさは東京ドーム約9個分、ビールの消費量は700万リットル以上
世界最大級のビール祭りです！！
移動式遊園地などもあり、お酒が飲めない方も楽しめます！

会場内で一番人気な場所は巨大なビールテント。
テント内ではドイツ政府公認の醸造会社が作るオクトーバーフェスト限定のビールやプレッツェルなど名物の食べ物が売られています。
限定のビールは3月から寝かされたもので、アルコール度数が高くコクが深いビール。
1リットルの大きなジョッキで飲み干します！

アップルkランゲージのドイツ語講師にオクトーバーフェストについて聞いてみました！

「Bierleiche」と言う単語を知っていますか？
日本語に訳すと「ビールの死体」。
オクトーバーフェストでは通常よりアルコール度数の高いビールを１リットルで飲むため酔っぱらった人たちが近くの芝生で倒れているそうです。
その様子を表す単語がBierleiche！

ミュンヘンの人達はオクトーバーフェストと言わず「die Wiesn」と言います。
オクトーバーフェストの会場名を省略したもので、”die Wiesn”でオクトーバーフェストのことと通じます！
また、現地の人たちの楽しみ方は、観光客が多く集まるオクトーバーフェストではなく、移動式遊園地などや同じ時期に催される伝統的なイベント！
オクトーバーフェストと同じくビールや食事を楽しむことができますよ！

世界の花火大会

◆世界最大の花火◆
アメリカ・コロラド州で開催される「Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival」では毎年2月上旬にウィンタースポーツの選手達のパフォーマンスと共に花火が上がります。
2020年に玉の大きさ約1.57m、重さ1,286㎏の花火玉が打ち上げられました！！
世界で最も大きい花火としてギネス記録に認定されています。

ちなみに2017年までは、埼玉県のこうのす花火大会で2014年に打ち上げられた直径約105cm、重さ約460kgの花火がギネスに認定されていました。

ご紹介した花火のように、海外ではカウントダウンや各国の記念日等みんなでお祝いするタイミングで花火が打ち上げられるようです！
夏に花火を見逃してしまった方、花火を海外に見に行ってはいかがでしょうか。

今月のリーディングチャレンジ “Which finger for your wedding ring?”

This imaginary 4)vein was called Vena Amoris (the vein of love).
Later science progressed and helped us understand that such a vein doesn’t exist, but the custom persisted. Hence, even now, the 5)groom and 6)bride are told (or simply want to express their love to the public) to place a ring on each other’s fourth finger, because of the vein of love!
How about you, do you want a ring on the fourth finger of your left hand?

Vocabulary:
1) Reign: in control of something (usually people or countries)
2) To conquer: take control of a place or people by military force.
3) Territory: an area of land under the control of a ruler or state.
4) Vein: tubes forming part of the blood circulation system.
5) Groom: a man about to get married.
6) Bride: a woman about to get married.

今月のリーディングチャレンジ2 “Improve your English with travel stories”

As a student, Bryson traveled across the entire continent of Europe. Back home he retraced his steps.
Starting in Hammerfest, Norway (the northernmost point in Europe), he made his way down to Istanbul, Turkey.
Along his journey, he passed by small and large cities alike; the City of Light (Paris), Florence (Italy), Hamburg (Germany), Copenhagen (Denmark) and others, adding his excellent 4)t and humor to the travel diary.

Furthermore, a travel story will describe countries, cities and culture, and authors are providing you with an incredible amount of adjectives that you can use later.
Instead of saying: “I arrived in the beautiful city of Paris” you might read something like:
“The City of Light presented its most charming and precious 6)gems to me”.

Finally, reading a good travel story will motivate you to visit a new destination with a deep understanding of it.
You will know so much more than if you hadn’t read anything about that place!
You might even feel like a local. Plus, you should get a deeper understanding of the author’s experience.
Hence you will 7)be eager to travel more and learn more about new cultures.

5)Wit: a natural skill for using words and ideas in a quick and inventive way to create humor.
