(Excuses for being late that might be forgiven)をご紹介!

6) I spent too much time picking out my clothes to see you.

7) A black kite stole my smartphone and I was chasing it.

Charles III, King of the United Kingdom”

As you have probably heard, last year (September 8th 2022, to be exact) Queen Elizabeth II passed away after 70 years of 1)reign (the longest reign for a woman in history).
Hence her oldest son, Charles, became King of the United Kingdom on the same day.
However, his 2)coronation did not take place until May 06th 2023, at Westminster Abbey.

What’s his full name?
Charles Philip Arthur George

How old is he?
King Charles was born on November 14th, 1948. He’s currently 74 years old.

His relationships and marriages
Charles III may not look like a 3)Casanova, but since his youth he’s been popular with women. Even more surprisingly, one of his girlfriends was Lady Sarah Spencer, the sister of Lady Diana Spencer.
It will always be difficult to know the full truth, but it appears that Charles initially was not very interested in Lady Diana; however, they traveled together a few times, which started to make the 4)tabloids’ frontpages. Eager to avoid a scandal, he married her and they had two sons: Prince William and Prince Harry.

After a few years, everyone noticed the couple’s incompatibility. Charles and Diana both committed 5)adultery, and what first looked like a fairy tale ended tragically with the death of Lady Diana.

Later, in 2005, Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles, who is now Queen Camilla.

Following every one of his moves, 6)Britons are pretty much undecided when asked if they support Charles III.
Many of them would have preferred to see Prince William (the older son of Charles and Diana) as their new king.

How about you, what is your opinion about King Charles III?

Vocabulary:
1) Reign: the period of rule of a King or Queen
2) Coronation: the ceremony of crowning a King or Queen
3) A Casanova: a man known for seducing women and having many lovers
4) Tabloid: a newspaper dominated by sensational stories / gossips
5) Adultery: voluntary sexual relationship between a married person and a person who is not their spouse.
6) Britons: people from Great Britain

2 “How to be safe while traveling outside of Japan?”

Should you return to Japan ASAP because there is nowhere else on earth as safe as here?
Well, not quite. It appears that the safest countries in the world are Iceland, New Zealand, Ireland and more, with Japan being only the 10th safest.

See more in the survey below:
Safest Countries in the World 2023

More seriously, you don’t need a bodyguard to travel to most countries, but you must be careful. Following the below advice should keep you out of most troubles.

-You’d better not carry too much cash with you. Simply carry what you need for the day and leave the rest of your cash in a safer place.

-Always keep an eye on your belongings.

-”When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Try to look like a local, turn on your 1)camouflage mode!

-It is recommended to wear simple clothes. 2)“Bling Bling” can wait!

-A Swatch will do the job perfectly and it will be much safer than a Rolex.

-Don’t look at a map or a guide book in the middle of a touristy area. It’s the perfect moment for a 3)pickpocket to rob you.

-Be careful around ATMs; don’t count your money in front of everyone.

-When possible, hire a guide. They will provide you with great service (information, visits,…) and will keep you away from dangerous areas.

If you rent a car:

-Take the full insurance course.

-Lock the doors while driving.

-Don’t rent a 4)cabriolet unless it has a 5)hard-top.

-Don’t leave anything valuable in the car.

-If another car hits yours from behind, don’t leave your vehicle; it might be a 6)car-jacking attempt. Only open the window a little so that you can talk.

-Last but not least, ask a friend, a relative or your AppleK teacher for recommendations before your departure. Someone who’s been to the place you are going to explore will surely be able to give you good tips.

Vocabulary:
1)Camouflage: way people or animals try to not attract attention by attempting their appearance to their surroundings. Like a chameleon.
2)Bling Bling: used to describe flashy and expensive jewelry, accessories, cars, bags,… Hip-hop stars or soccer players often bling bling items.
3)Pickpocket: a thief who secretly steals valuable items.
4)Cabriolet: a car that can be driven without a roof.
5)Hard-top: a hard (usually metallic) roof used for cabriolet instead of flexible materials like plastic.
6)Car-jacking: the situation in which someone stole a car in the presence of its owner; often violent and under the threat of a gun.
